Yunnan

Yunnan is a land locked province in southwest of China. It neighbors Tibet to its northwest, Sichuan Province to its north, Guizhou Province to its east. It shares a long border line with Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos to its south. Most of Yunnan’s 400,000km2 terrains are on plateau or hilly regions, with 80% of its land sits on elevation between 1000-3500 meters. The hilly terrains of Yunnan constituted a geological segregation of its population; that in turn lead to development of segregated tribes which, through out long period of time, evolved into many ethnic groups. Yunnan is currently home to 25 ethnic groups, the most numerous in China. 15 of these 25 ethnic groups are unique to Yunnan Province. A third of its 48 million population are registered as ethnic minority. Its diversity of demographics is a major attraction to visitors, they come for Yunnan’s colourful and dazzling ethnic cultures and customs. On top of that, Yunnan is not short of natural scenery, it boasts grand views of alpine mountains, extensive karst landscapes, crystal clear lakes and thundering water gorges. 

Beihai Wetland Park

Covers an area of 17 square kilometers, Beihai wetland is surrounded by mountains, located in a special geographical position, and is a typical subtropical volcanic lava barrier lake marsh wetland. The reserve features a “floating blanket style” marsh, complex biodiversity and high productivity. The reserve is a garden of rare plants. Some protected plants like Brasenia schreberi and wildwater chestnuts are found here in this wetland. It is also a paradise for wading birds and bird spotters.

Naozhao Island of Folk Culture

Nanzhao Folk Cuture Island is one of three islands and islets on Erhai Lake. It is within the Shuanglang village which is the sweet spot among all Erhai Lake region. It is a tiny island compared to the vastness of Erhai Lake.

Butterfly Spring

Butterfly Spring where thousands of butterflies flutter among the branches and blossoms and over the spring forming an amazing ‘ Kingdom of Butterflies’. Above the pool there are ancient trees known by the local as the Butterfly Trees, its their fragrant blossom at certain time of the year (normally in May) attracts thousands of butterflies in the short period of time. These colorful creatures fly around the pool and settle on the tree in great clusters as they sip the nectar from the blossoms.

Yunnan Nationalities Museum

The displayed items are categorized into 8 themes: Sociology of Ethnic Minority-Reform & Development, Eco-Industry of Ethnic Minority in Yunnan, Textile Technology and Art of Costumes of Ethnic Minority in Yunnan, Folk Fine Arts of Ethnic Minority in Yunnan, Festivals, Music & Dance of Ethnic of Minority in Yunnan, Handy Crafts of Ethnic Minority in Yunnan, Ancient Books and Documents of Ethnic Minority in Yunnan, Rare Stones and Gems. All these are displayed in 16 exhibition halls.

Nuodeng Ancient Village

Nuodeng has preserved a large number of Ming and Qing dynasty buildings and the famous Jade Emperor Pavilion Taoist complex, which is known as the "Millennium Bai Village". Centering on Nuodeng Town of Yunlong County, Nuodeng ScenicArea includes Nuodeng thousand year old Bai nationality ancient village, Tianchi, natural Taiji diagram, Hutou Mountain and Bijiang Ancient Bridge.

Kunming World Horticulture Expo Garden

The World Horticulture Expo Garden covers an area of 200 hectares and consists of 5 indoor exhibition halls (the China Hall, the Man and Nature Hall, the Green House, the Science and Technology Hall, and the International Hall), 6 theme gardens (the Tree Garden, the Tea Garden, the Bonsai Garden, the Medicinal Herb Garden, the Bamboo Garden, and the Vegetable and Fruit Garden) and 34 outdoor gardens.

Daguan Pavilion

Daguan Pavilion locates in Kunming city. It was built in late 17th century, during the reign the Emperor Kangxi, Qing Dynasty. The story of this pavilion started in 1690 when local governor Wang Jiwen inspected the vicinity. He was stunned by the sheer beauty of the scenery and issued an order to build a pavilion here so people can view the beautiful scenery from this pavilion, hence the name Daguan.

Yunnan Ethnicity Village

This village is a theme park highlights the culture and customs of different ethnics in China. There are 56 officially recognized ethnic groups in China. 52 of them can be found in Yunnan Province. Among these 52 races, 25 of them have population more than 5000. These 26 ethnics have villages built around their premises. This park has 25 themed villages built to showcase the life of these ethnics.

Shuhe Old Town

Shuhe Old Town is one of the oldest habitats of Lijiang and well-preserved town on the Ancient Tea Route (茶马古道) showing the history of Naxi ethnic minority group from farming centralization to commercial centralization. An important part of Lijiang Ancient Town area, both the towns were listed as World Cultural Sites by the UNESCO in 1997.

Baisha Old Town

Baisha has always been a bustling trading town in history and was famous for its bronze wares.Naxi people made bronze ware not just for themselves but also traded bronze wares with nearby ethnic groups such as Tibetans.

Yuanyang Rice Terraces

Based on the landforms of mountains and the local conditional, the Hani people push up the hill sides with different shape and size. After generations’ development, nowadays, the rice terrace in large scale and still in using. Also become a famous tourism place of Yunnan.

Jianshui Ancient Town

Despite successive wars and social upheavals, numerous ancient buildings have survived, including the thatch- and bamboo-roofed houses of the Hani people, the bungalows of the Yi and the Dai people, and the tile-roofed one-storey houses of the Han.

Yubeng Village

The Ice Lake is tiny but definitely worth the uphill journey. The scenery on the way is great and the area surrounding the lake is in stark contrast to the valley which leads to it. It looks like another planet, and you can even walk up onto the ice.

Balagezong Scenic Area

It earns very high admiration for the mysterious ancient Bala Village, hospitable villagers, holy snow mountains, plank road over Gangqu River, and precipitous gorges, especially Shangri-la Grand Canyon.

The Tiger Leaping Gorge

The river is in various states; sometimes it gallops with random stones and flying waves; sometimes it becomes misty with flying waterfalls; which forms a peculiar landscape.

Potatso National Park

Besides these two lakes, forest, marsh, valley and alpine meadows can be seen in the park. All major spots are connected by walkable planks which offers a close distance for travelers to experience the natural environment.

Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery

The monastery is known as the little Potala Palace, because its traditional Tibetan atmosphere resembles the famous palace in Lhasa, the monastery's location and architecture make is a fantastic destination.

Shika Snow Mountain

Boasting its precipitous snow peaks, beautiful valleys, forests, lakes, meadows and numerous legends, it is a comprehensive scenic spots best reflecting the romantic charming of Shangri-la, which attracts many people here for hiking and adventure.

Napa Lake

In summer streams from snow mountain around made it a beautiful lake. In winter and spring seasons, the open water shrink and the lake turn into a large swamp meadow. the lake turns into a temporary habitat for migratory birds

Dukezong Ancient Town

The old Tibetan dwellings vividly shows their way of life; Tibetan chess is played in local households with a history of 1,000 years; horse bells still tinkle along the ancient caravan path.
