Situated in the highest place of Nyingchi Prefecture in Tibet, Namcha barwa is a mountain in the Tibetan Himalaya.It stands inside the Great Bend of the Yarlung Tsangpo River as the river enters its notable gorge across the Himalaya, emerging as the Siang and becoming the Brahmaputra.
The distance from Lhasa down the Kham-Tibet Highway to Bayi is about 404 km. If one goes down the southern bank of the Niyang River and crosses the Ganga Bridge to the Milin County, the distance will be 75 kilometers. Going from Milin eastwards along the Yarlung Tsanpo River for 91 km, one will get to the Pai District at the latitude of 3,100 meters. From there down the temporary highroad northwards for another 18 km, passing the Daduka Village to Gega, one may walk to the Namcha Barwa mountain climbing camping ground which is about 3,512 meters above the sea level.
Namcha Barwa is a holy place of the most ancient Tibetan religion-Bon Religion.With an altitude of 7782 meters, Namcha barwa is noted for its mystery and enjoys a reputation as “the father of Tibetan mountains” in Tibet and anyone who is able to see its main peak is said to have a fate with Buddha.
It is not exaggerated to say that Namcha Barwa stretches across tropical and frigid zones, is an exceptional natural museum. Namcha Barwa has three ridges, northwestern ridge, northeastern ridge, and southern ridge. The northeastern ridge zigzags 30 km north to the Yarlung Zangpo River bank, thus to form the warm moist flow in India Ocean. Therefore, the area of Namcha Barwa has the most favorable condition and climate in the Himalayas.
The huge triangle-shape body of Mt. Namcha Barwa is covered with snow and folded in the mist all year round. It will never be so easy to reveal its true color that it also gained the nickname as “Shy Girl Peak.” Besides, there is another peak of 7043 meters’ elevation standing 2 km far from the south ridge while two snow-capped peak about 7 km’s altitude are lying on the northwest ridge. All the beautiful peaks and the rolling ridges contributed to the reputation of Mt. Namcha Barwa as “the most beautiful mountain”.
The best time to visit beautiful Namche Barwa is from October to the next April, because of its less rainfall, dry and sunny weather, and high visibility.
The first viewpoint that is appropriate for tourists to see Mt.Namcha Barwa is the Segyi La Mountain Pass which is at an elevation of 4728 meters, being the first pass leading to Nyingchi area. A viewing platform has been provided for tourists to enjoy the scenery especially to watch the most important attraction-view of Mt. Namcha Barwa on the Sejiala Mountain Pass, where tourists are able to view the peak at a distance and the peak towering in the sea of clouds seems quite more attractive than usual.
