Wuwei is a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Gansu Province, an important node city of Gansu section of the Silk Road Economic Belt, a national historical and cultural city and a central city of Hexi Corridor. It has jurisdiction over one district, two counties and one autonomous county, covering an area of 32,300 square kilometers. It is inhabited by 41 ethnic groups, including Han, Tibetan, Hui and Mongolian. The resident population is 1,464,955.

Wuwei is located in northwest China, central Gansu Province, the eastern end of Hexi Corridor, bordering the provincial capital city Lanzhou in the east, Xining in the south, Yinchuan and Inner Mongolia in the north and Xinjiang in the west. Wuwei has numerous scenic spots and historic sites and its natural landscape and history and culture complement each other. Wuwei has been named as the national historical and cultural city, China's excellent tourist city and China's wine city.

Wuwei has a long history as early as 4,000 or 5,000 years ago. There were northern ethnic groups living here. The name of Wuwei has a history of more than 2,200 years. Because Wuwei is located at the key point of the ancient Silk Road, it is the economic hub between the ancient central plains and the western regions, the integration and dissemination of the central plains culture and the western regions culture, the western section of the Silk Road is a major pass, Chinese and foreign businessmen gathered in the city.

Wuwei City is located in the intersection of Loess Plateau, Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Mongolia-Xinjiang Plateau. The terrain is high in the west and low in the east, and the local topography is complex.

 

● What to do & where to go in Wuwei

Wuwei was the hub of the ancient Silk Road, cultural tourism resources are unique. Snow plateau, oasis scenery, desert gobi and other natural landscapes and historical culture complement each other. There are 7 national 4A(second level) scenic spots, 12 3A(third level) scenic spots and 2A(fourth level) scenic spots.

There are Leitai Han Tomb, a symbol of Chinese tourism, Unparalleled Monument to the Western Xia Dynasty, Tianti Mountain Grottoes, the first grottoes in China, Wuwei Confucian Temple, "The Crown of Learning Palace in Gansu Province", Buddhist master Kumarashi "Tongue Sarira" Tower and the most complete preservation in the northwest, the landlord manor Minqin Ryan Fort and other historic sites.

 

● What to eat in in Wuwei

Bread in watermelon, Mid-Autumn Festival big mooncake, noodles with lamb soup and yellow millet, white yak meat, marinated meat clip bun, braised lamb, bean jelly and so on.


● Transportation

Railway: Lanzhou-Xinjiang Railway has stations in Wuwei, one can take train to/from Lanzhou, Zhangye, Jiuquan, Jiayuguan, Hami, Turpan, Urumqi etc.

Gantang-Wuwei Railway has station in Wuwei, spanning three provinces of Ningxia, Inner Mongolia and Gansu.

Lanzhou-Zhangye High Speed Railway has station in Wuwei City.

Highway: There are four expressways in the area and transportaion is convenient .

Airport: Jinchang Jinchuan Airport located in Jinchang City, 60km from Wuwei. There are flights to Lanzhou,Beijing,Shanghai,Chengdu and Xian. 

Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport is 230 kilometers away from Wuwei. There are more flights to/from main cities in China and some cities at abroad. 


● Climate

Wuwei City is temperate continental arid climate, which is characterized by four distinct seasons, cold in winter and hot in summer, large daily and annual changes in temperature, less precipitation, uneven distribution, large evaporation, dry climate, strong solar radiation and adequate illumination. The average annual temperature is 7.7℃, the average temperature of the coldest month in January is -7.9℃ and the average temperature of the hottest month in July is 21.4℃. The rainfall is concentrated from June to September and the most is in August.
