Overhanging Great Wall was initially built in 1539, during the reign of Emperor Jiajing of Tang Dynasty, and went under reconstruction in 1987 when sidesteps were added, in order to allow visitors climb up the wall, and two new observation decks were built on its both sides.
Due to its imposing appearance similar to a dragon overlooking the slope of Mount Heishan, Xuanbi is often compared to the Badaling section in Beijing.
The Overhanging Great Wall Military Defense System Area comprises the Hanging Great Wall on the steep ridge, the Water Gate in the valley, and the Ancient Weaponry Exhibition.
You can see austere panoramas from the Suspended Great Wall. For the convenience of climbing, steps were built on the wall. Despite these, it is still a steep climb to the top of the 400 steps, but it is worth the effort when looking out from the top. It's a 45-degree slope that travelers should still climb to reach the highest part of the Great Wall. After travelling the hard 500 meters, then you are rewarded with a 360 degree panoramic view of the desert with snowcapped peaks in the distance.
The scenery is strikingly arid — north the desert extends to the horizon, there are a few oases north of Jiayuguan to the east, to the south and west are steep dry mountains and gullies.
