To see Giant Pandas is the must-do thing while you are touring in Chengdu. Except for normal visit to see the pandas outside the breeding house, you can also get closer look to the pandas by holding pandas or doing volunteering work in Giant Panda Base in Chengdu.
Join in the panda volunteer program at Wolong Panda Base! You can be a panda cleaner, learn to prepare cakes for pandas, feed them by yourself… to know about the daily duty of staff around pandas in Wolong Panda Base. Apart from that, you can learn a lot of facts and knowledge of pandas to know why they are so cute to be the national treasure of Chinese people and even favored by people worldwide, and have a clear understanding about what we could do to protect the giant pandas to save this precious species on our planet.
◆ Dujiangyan Panda Base
Located about 67 kilometers away from Chengdu downtown.
Dujiangyan Panda Base was open to the public in recent years. The main function of the Dujiangyan base is the giant panda's nursing and disease control.
◆ Wolong Panda Reserve
Located in the southwestern Wenchuan County, 130km away from Chengdu.Being different from other regular zoos, Wolong Panda Reserve provides wild natural environment for pandas so that they would never be kept in cages. While touring in the reserve, you may come across cute pandas accidently.
Highlights of Panda Volunteering Tour Program
● Get a close look at giant pandas while donating your time
● Learn the living environment of Giant Pandas
● Do some cleanings : clean the bamboo leftover of pandas and panda poop
● Feed the pandas with specially-made Wowotou (a kind of steamed bread) and fruit .
Panda Volunteer Program Schedule
08:30am-09:00am Preparation
Arrive at Dujiangyan Panda Base around 08:30 am. Learn the safety announcement and sign the security agreement. Put on work clothes and gloves, wear volunteer pass card before go the work place. You will be led by experienced keepers and told matters needed attention.
09:00am-10:00am Honorable Panda Keeper
Volunteers involve in panda volunteer work, including carrying out old bamboos, picking up droppings, cleaning up panda enclosures, carrying in fresh bamboos leaves and shoots, etc.
10:00am-11:00am Wonderful Panda Tour
Take a visit to other panda enclosures, walk around the panda base for more giant pandas and red pandas. You may see them sitting on the grass, climbing trees, playing together and even fighting. Bring out your camera to take awesome photos and videos about them.
11:00am-11:30am Regardful Panda Feeding
Feed the giant pandas with panda cake or other food, like carrot, bamboo shoot and apple. Know their eating behavior and diet and have very close interaction with the cute bears.
11:30am-13:00pm Lunch & Break Time
Have lunch with the staff and other volunteers in the restaurant and take a short break.
13:00pm-14:00 Watch Panda Documentary
Watch a panda documentary that shows the scientific facts about the endangered species, to understand how humans protect them and how we may live in harmony with them.
14:00pm-14:50pm Panda Feeding
Clean the panda enclosure and feed the panda again.
14:50pm-15:30 Panda Nutritionist
Volunteers can personally prepare food for the pandas and also make the panda cake.
15:30pm-16:00 Finish Volunteer Work
After the full day’s panda volunteer experience, you’ll get the panda volunteer certificate and souvenirs. Before you leave, catch the last moment to say goodbye to the lovely creatures. Later, your guide and driver will escort you to your hotel in Chengdu
