Cuomujiri Lake, also known by locals as Ice Lake, is a Morainal Lake located some 12km to the northwest of Bayi Town, the seat of Nyingchi Prefecture.
In the Tibetan language, Cuomujiri means ‘ tears of Bodhisattva.’, as it is known to locals, The lake is made from tears of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva(a holly figure in Buddhism).
With an elevation of 4,100 metres, Cuomujiri Lake is surrounded by lofty snow-capped peaks and well-preserved virgin forests, mostly fir and golden bamboo, providing an excellent environment with high oxygen content.
Its primitive beauty and tranquility have long been a magnet for visitor from home and abroad. The fascinating views vary with seasons, in particular in autumn, visitors will be amazed by the eye-pleasing blossom of rhododendron.
A U shaped valley is visible on the way from top of the lake to Bayi power plant, that was the remain of an ancient glacier movement.
Main attractions around the lake are Gongbu Masion, relics of old temple, holly mountain of Potala Palace, marriage tree and hero tree, all associated with local legends.
