Tibet Museum is the product of direct investment by central government. It is the only national level museum in Tibet Autonomous Region. The museum was inaugurated in October 1999, the date which commemorated the 50th Anniversary of People’s Republic of China and the 40th Anniversary of Democratic Reform of Tibet.
The museum covers an area of 50,000 square metres with 10,000 square meters dedicated to display the unique Tibetan culture, architecture, art and history.
The museum hold a rich collection of artifacts represents Tibetan culture. Buddha sculptures, Tanka, classic books, porcelain, jade object and items related to Tibetan custom are well preserved to demonstrate a colorful history of Tibet and Tibetan people.
Display areas are divided into seven sections. Every year, about 10 temporary display will be held. The museum is actively engaged with exchange programs with cultural facilities at home and abroad. The museum is dedicated to promote public awareness of Tibetan culture for both domestic and overseas visitors.
Over the years, Tibet Museum has been rated National Level 1 Museum. It is became the largest centre for the preservation and demonstration of Tibetan culture in Tibet. It has became an icon in Lhasa city.
Museum started renovation works as number of visitors increasing every year. In order to further maintain its facilities and displayed objects, the museum were closed to public visit since 1st of December 2017. It will reopen to public once all renovation completes.
