Danxia landscape, or known as red sandstone layer, is a unique geological landscape first recorded and studied in Danxia Mountain, Renhua County, Guangdong Province back in early days of 1920s. This type of rock layer is made of ferric oxide and manganic oxide, which are insoluble in the water and present its characteristic red color. With help of wind and rain erosion and tectonic movement, Danxia landscape come in different shapes and sizes.In technical term, Danxia landscape can be roughly translated as fragastic rock landform mostly consist of red sand conglomerate accompanied with escarpment.
Chishui Danxia is the representative of early Danxia landscape, covering 1200 square kilometers. It is the largest and mostly developed Danxia landscape in China. Danxia in Chishui is unique to other ones in China as they are mostly found in caves with streams and creeks running over its top.
Fengguangyan scenic spot is one of the key components of Chishui Danxia World Heritage. Danxia World Heritage is consist of 6 major Danxia landscape site: Chishui (Guizhou Province), Langshan (Hunan Province), Danxia Mountain (Guangdong Province), Taining (Fujian Province), Longhu Mountain (Jiangxi Province) and Langshan (Zhejiang Province).
This Foguangyan Danxia Landscape in Chishui is the crown Jewry in the world of Danxia landscape. It is a unique curved wall cliff stretching more than 1000 meters and towers 300 meters. This majestic site was formed during Jurassic and Crustaceous period. A 200 meter high and 40 meter wide waterfall cascade down from top of the red sand stone. The cliff wall itself, made of red sandstone, glows in the afternoon sun light. The mist from the waterfall and the glow from the wall surface, to many Buddhists is a holy image, just like the enlightening light beam from Buddha as portrayed in scripts, hence the name Foguangyan, meaning the rock that glows like a Buddha.
