Museum of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (Xinjiang Museum) is situated on 132# Xibei Road, Urumqi City. It is a comprehensive museum aimed at collecting, preserving and promoting the cultural relics of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
The history of this museum dates back to late 1950s. It was originally designed to function as an agricultural exhibition centre for Xinjiang Region. But it was redesigned and moved to the current site in 1962. A brand new building complex was completed in 2005 with areas of 17288 square meters. It has 1 underground level and 2 levels above ground. The main exhibition hall towers 18.5 meters. Exhibition halls are categorized by 2 themes: Historical Relics of Xinjiang; Folk Culture and Customs of Xinjiang. Apart from this two fixed exhibition themes, other themed exhibitions were held focusing particular historical period of Xinjiang region.
Mummified Body from Loulan
In 1980, a well preserved mummified female body was dug out in the ancient Loulan castle in an area known as Lop Nur. This 3800 year old is considered the oldest mummy ever found in China. She was at her 40-45 when she died. Due to the arid climate of Lop Nur region, much of her details were preserved, providing a window which archeologist could delve deeper into the mystic Loulan Kingdom.
Bronze Warrior
This 40cm tall bronze warrior figure was unearthed in 1981. Experts speculate that this bronze figure represented the tribal warriors lived in 5th century BC in nowadays Ili region of Xinjiang
