Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, also known as Chongqing Museum, is one of the first batch national first class museum and national comprehensive museum jointly built by the central and local government. Located in Yuzhong District, Chongqing Municipality, it is opposite to Chongqing People's Auditorium. Its predecessor was the Southwest Museum established in March 1951 and renamed Chongqing Museum in June 1955. In September 2000, The General Office of the State Council approved its establishment and added the name Chongqing Museum. The new museum was officially opened to the public on June 18, 2005. It aims to undertake education, preservation and scientific research with respect to cultural heritage and the natural environment in Chongqing and the Three Gorges region of the Yangtze River.
Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum covers an area of 30,000 square meters, construction area of 45,098 square meters, exhibition area of 20,858 square meters. The exhibition consists of 4 basic displays, 6 special displays, 1 full 360-degree cinima, 1 half landscape display, 1 audience practice center and 3 temporary displays. On November 18, 2020, it was elected as the New Landmark of Bashu(Chongqing & Chengdu) Cultural Tourism Corridor.
The main project of Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum covers a total land area of 2.9316 hectares. It is a first-class high-rise building, with one underground floor for cultural relics warehouse, garage and equipment room, and four above ground floors for exhibition hall, lecture hall and management auxiliary room. Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum's overall layout through the east-west axis of the People's Auditorium symmetry axis, and a gestalt to connect the people's Square and the main building of the museum, the main axis of the people's Auditorium, People's Square, museum trinity, forming a "trinity" four dimensional effect. The people's Square and the museum are linked by a giant pipa pattern.
The exhibition hall covers 23,225 square meters. There are four main displays:
