Furong Cave in Wulong, Chongqing is China national 5A(top level) tourist area, the most beautiful cave in China, China national key scenic spot and China national geopark. The huge cave body and rich cave deposits in Furong Cave have not only conquered cave experts from all over the world, but also attracted many tourists. On June 27, 2007, Furong Cave was included in the World Natural Heritage List together with the Three Natural Bridges and Houping Qingkou Tiankeng Scenic spot, becoming the sixth World Natural Heritage site in China and the first World Natural Heritage site in Chongqing. It is also the only cave listed in the World Natural Heritage site in China.
Furong Cave is a large limestone cave formed in the Quaternary Pleistocene (about 1.2 million years ago) and developed in the dolomitic limestone of the ancient Cambrian system. Deep inside the cave, the stable temperature is 16.1 degrees. Furong Cave main cave is 2,700 meters long, tour path 1860 meters, bottom width 12-15 meters above, the widest 69.5 meters. The cave height is generally 8-25 meters, the highest 48.3 meters. The total area of the cave bottom is 37,000 square meters, among which the Huihuang Hall covers an area of more than 1,000 square meters and an area of 11,000 square meters which is the most spectacular. The maximum static and passenger capacity of Furong Cave is 185,000 people. It is also known as one of the "three biggest caves in the world".
In May 1993, Furong Cave was accidentally discovered by 6 local villagers in Jiangkou Town, Wulong District, which immediately aroused high attention of the local government and they concentrated manpower, material resources and financial resources to develop at a high starting point, high standard and high level. From 1994 to 2001, joint expedition team by scientists from 20 countries made several scientific investigations on the huge group of caves. Mr. Andy, vice
president of the International Cave Association and leader of the Sino-American joint expedition, evaluated Furong Cave after his investigation, "Furong Cave is the best touring cave in China and also one of the best touring caves in the world". Professor Zhu Xuewen, president of the Cave Research Institute of The Geological Society of China and leader of the Chinese team, evaluated Furong Cave after his investigation, "Furong Cave is a gorgeous and brilliant underground art palace and a museum of cave science with rich contents".
